Bare with me. This turned out longer than I had planned but I was behind on blogging and wanted to use this post to share something with you and also to document it all.)

If you follow me on Facebook or if you follow my sister-in-law on her blog, By God's Southern Grace, you might already have an indication of what I am about to post.

Judd and I feel so blessed to share some very exciting news.

We are expecting our first child!!! (Cast your vote on the baby's gender by leaving us a comment with your guess or respond to our poll on the top right of the page.)

I found out on an away game football Saturday (Nov. 9, 2013). Judd and I had already watched the Auburn vs. Tennessee game that afternoon. After the game, Judd walked over to the neighbor's house to watch some other games and to visit. While he was out, mostly on a whim, I decided to take a pregnancy test. Needless to say, I was very surprised and so thrilled with the results.

Being the planner that I am, and knowing that we were just starting to try, I had already planned out how I wanted to tell Judd. I had the materials prepared in advance. They were all themed for football season, so if things had not worked out in a few months I would have needed to start over with my decorations. It was all meant to be in every way I guess. :)

My original thought was that he would be in the house and I would need to put together the surprise in a place where he would not catch me in action. I thought I could sneak out to the car for a few minutes undetected.

Although he ended up being gone, I stuck with my original plan. Immediately after reading the results, I quickly grabbed my "telling Judd" folder of materials and ran outside to the car. I managed to get it all together and close the trunk before he came home. I sent him a text message about dinner as an excuse and luckily it only took him about 10 minutes to get home. That was such a long 10 minutes to me. My heart was racing. I was so happy and still kind of in disbelief. I couldn't wait to share this life hanging news with the love of my life.

Being the sweet husband that he is, he walked right out to help me. I've included below a couple of pictures of what he found.

Since then, we've had several other really special times.

We had the joy of being able to share our big news with our family at and just after Thanksgiving. We tried really hard to be able to tell both sides of our family in person at the same time; although, travel schedules and holiday plans got in the way a bit. It ended up turning out just fine though.

We told my family first. We celebrated the holiday with them. Just before Thanksgiving dinner, following our Thanksgiving tradition of blessing the food and giving the thanks through a family prayer circle, each family member shared what he or she was thankful for this Thanksgiving. When it got to Judd, he shared that he and I were so glad to share some very special news with our family and that he was so thankful that he was finally going to get to know what it was like to be a daddy. About that time, everybody in the room lost it. It was a precious moment that I will never forget.

The following day, November 29, we got to share the news with Judd's parents since they were coming to Auburn for the Iron Bowl game. The 29th happened to also be Judd's dad's birthday. Judd sketched and water colored a special birthday card for his dad that featured Aubie the tiger, Auburn University's mascot, as a baby cub. It was precious. Inside, we wrote that we made him something special for his birthday. We, of course, meant another grandchild and the card itself. Judd's parents were so sweet and happy for us.

Skip forward another month to when we started sharing the news with friends. I had the pleasure of telling my dear friends, the fab, at our annual Christmas gift exchange party. I carried in my gift with the following tag attached. I placed it under the tree and waited for the girls to notice. It didn't take long. It is such a pleasure to have friends who can celebrate in our joy.

Throughout all of this, we had a chance to see our precious little one and to hear his or her heartbeat. Our first appointment was on Dec. 4. We were 8 weeks along at that time. Judd did have the doctor double check that we were not having twins. Ha. The heartbeat was most beautiful sound I had ever heard.

Our last few tailgates have been just as much fun as the ones I posted about here. In fact, a couple of weeks ago, when our Auburn University tigers played Ole Miss, we went all out with a southern themed tailgate.

Our menu included fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, hashbrown casserole, green bean casserole, and brownies with pecans on top. Don't worry we did have fresh vegetables to offset the potential heart attacks caused by the rest of the menu.

There is one thing in particular on our menu; however, that I want to share with you.

While enjoying great food, we've also had a blast spending quality time outdoors with friends and family the last few weeks.

During our southern food themed tailgate we served these little tasties as appatizers. I'm calling them southern sliders. They were so delicious that I wanted to highlight their goodness and share them with y'all here on TLP.

Southern Sliders

Ingredients:

French bread

Pimento cheese

Conecuh sausage (cooked)

Pickled green tomatoes

Toothpicks

Recipe:

Slice bread into thin pieces. Place bread slices flat on an ungreased jelly roll pan. Toast in a 350 degree oven for approximately 5 minutes.

Spoon your favorite store bought pimento cheese over the top side of your toast pieces. Or, if you have time, spoon homemade pimento cheese over the top. ;)

Cut your cooked sausage in half to create a flat side. Then cut it in 1-2 inch pieces. Rest 1 piece of sausage on top of each piece of pimento cheese covered bread.

Slide toothpicks through wedges of pickled green tomotoes, one piece per toothpick. Place a piece of green tomato atop each piece of sausage making sure to press the toothpick all of the way through to the toast layer.

The pickled green tomatoes we used were canned by my Uncle Frank. In case you don't have an Uncle Frank, I suggest you can your own or try to find some store bought pickled green tomatoes. I think pickled okra would be great with this as well.

These southern sliders were a crowd pleaser. They pleased me too because they were easy and delicious.

Enjoy! Who knows, you might eat so many that you will feel like this.

Amazingly, the four of us, under the leadership of our Dr. Diva mentor, were able to graduate together a whole year early with our Ph.D.s while also working full-time. That is a VERY rare accomplishment.

We have not all been together since just after our commencement ceremony in December 2013. About that time, I moved to Auburn, AL to accept a new position at Auburn University. Our mentor, Dr. Searby, also took a job at AU.

Luckily, we were able to enjoy some time together this weekend. It was so fun to catch up with each other. The three Divas still living in Birmingham, AL came down to Auburn for a Diva weekend. We ate delicious food at Acre and Ma Fia's, drank good wine and yummy cocktails, shopped, and enjoyed special fellowship. to miss his birth because I had meeting that day that I was not going to be able to postpone; however, when I arrived at work that morning, I noticed an email that someone else had delayed the meeting. Woo Hoo. It took me all of about 3 seconds to notify my colleagues that I was leaving immediately in hopes of being there for my nephew’s birth. I went straight home, packed a bag, and grabbed my camera. We hopped in the car as soon as possible. Judd and I still were not sure we could make it in time. After all, Brenna was already in labor and we had an approximately 3 hour drive ahead of us. Landry was born in Milton, FL and we were driving from Auburn, AL. We did make it just in time. Landry was born about a half hour after we arrived.

We all waited anxiously at the hospital. A few weeks prior to his birthday we created a pool for Landry’s birth. To help the time pass, I awarded the birthday award to Terry. He sure was proud to become a grandpa that day! The prize was popcorn since we were all guessing when Brenna was going to pop.

<a
Our extended family is growing by two. Judd's brother, Colby, and his wife, Brenna, are expecting a baby boy any day now. Additionally, my brother, Bryan, and his wife, Laura, are also expecting a baby who is due in December. As a result, we have participated in lots of showers and baby fun lately. In fact, my in-laws, Judd, and I had the pleasure of hosting a family baby shower for Brenna and Colby a few weekends ago.

The theme was "Frogs, Snails, and Puppy Dog Tails - That's What Boys Are Made Of". The location of the party was supposed to be at the Langham family farm; however, there had been so much rain at the farm prior to the shower that we had to relocate the party to my MIL's church fellowship hall. Just imagine a farm setting for all of the pictures in this post. :).

They simply receive the final order of their invitation design and are then free to print the invitations any way they prefer. Additionally, our business approach allows our clients to print on the paper/cardstock selection of their choosing. Once we send the final design to the customer, he or she can print the order on his or her own or have a professional printer do it. If the client decides to have a professional print shop print their order for them, all they have to do is take the file to the print shop.
It turned out pretty cute. What is to follow in this post is a quick tutorial on how to make your own Hippity Hoppity Easter Carrot. I made mine for well under $10 because I already had a good many of the necessary supplies.

The items below are what you will need to make this craft.

1 yard of cream burlap folded in half

Acrylic paints (orange, white, and two shades of green)

Fabric paint with a tip for writing (black)

Sharpie marker

Scissors

Paint brush

Kitchen trash bag or drop cloth to place underneath while painting

Several plastic garbage bags or plastic grocery sacks for stuffing

Hot glue gun

Small piece of wire to use for hanging

paper plate to serve as a paint palate

The first step is to cut your burlap into the desired carrot shape. Since I folded the burlap in half, I cut both the front and back sides of the carrot out at the same time after drawing the shape I wanted on the top piece of burlap with my sharpie marker. Don’t worry about making marks on the fabric because the top piece with the lines on it will eventually be placed underneath the clean piece. The lines will go on the inside of your carrot and will never be seen again.

Next, paint on glue using a paint brush dipped in water. This step will make your burlap stiff and will help your paint to go on better. Allow the glue to dry.

After you have drawn your template. Place it beneath the clean piece of burlap. Use the lines you drew to trace your design with paint . Make sure you are painting on what is now your clean front piece of burlap. In the photograph below, I peeled an edge of my clean portion up a bit so that you can see the template I drew sitting underneath it. Next, paint your stem entirely with the darkest shade of green.

While the green stem is drying, use the faint lines showing through from the bottom piece of burlap to guide the painting of your white chevron patterned sections.

While your white painted sections are drying, use the lightest shade of green to highlight your stem. One major change is that we just moved from Birmingham, Alabama to Auburn, Alabama.
I wish I could share that we are settled and unpacked. Instead, I'll share how things really look. YIKES! We'll get there....eventually.

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhsHYHwR-WCpLhgsiFsOxvIS6BhjhXpoJyjuu1lk5WxVtLHD8V4VndiiybtFPLAcdQgux-sr1HaXrHWrhtFUP584s9oh2zAhkfUjGk6UNi58uL4rkc3Oq4SQHltCpQWV07nQhGPcAbj-evd/s640/blogger-image--598331592.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em;
I promise I am still alive. I am also still very much interested in posting on my blog. I am having technical difficulties and have been too busy with my job and school to fix it. I hope to be blogging again soon.

Love,
I am still here and wanting to post. I have a few posts written; however, I can't publish them. I cannot seem to publish any posts that contain pictures. Has anyone else had this problem? I think maybe I've reached the capacity limit for pictures in Picasa/blogger. Help! The Langham'shttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14427948269312695822noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2817406497943045953.post-71481423922232375872012-09-13T13:15:00.001-05:002013-01-09T09:45:45.901-06:00Jewelry Storage
I am on the hunt for an attractive yet functional way to store my jewelry. While I have a few nice pieces, most of my collection is costume jewelry. I want to protect the nice pieces and any pieces that might tarnish. I want to be able to easily access each piece when I am in a hurry and on my way out the door. I want to display the larger pieces and the most eye-catching ones in an visually appealing way.

I’ve found a few ideas on Pinterest. However, I do not have a space in my bedroom that is low enough to do anything that sits on top of a piece of furniture. The only furniture in our bedroom other than the bed is a tall chest of drawers and two mismatched nightstands. Also, there is no room in my closet. I’ve thought about using my nightstand; however, I can just see myself knocking something off with the covers or a pillow that may fall. So, I think the nightstand option is out.

I’m getting inspired by the following photos. Judd is experienced in all facets of the design process from conceptual design, design development, construction documentation, and construction administration. He currently serves as an invited guest juror at Auburn University for graduate level design studio reviews, and he serves as a guest lecturer at both the University of Alabama at Birmingham and Auburn University. Additionally, he serves as an Adjunct Professor for the Master of Landscape Architecture Program at Auburn University. Having attained status as a LEED Accredited Professional, Judd takes pleasure in using his education, skills, and talents through his professional practice at 2D Studio LLC to make an ecologically sustainable difference one design at a time.

Born in Brewton, Alabama, a small rural city in south Alabama, his interest in landscape gardening and design came at an early age. At age 15, he started his own landscape maintenance company along with his father and brother. It flourished and grew to include a landscape installation and construction business. Through this early entrepreneurial endeavor he gained residential design and installation experience which resulted in Judd’s passion for landscape design and inspired him to study at Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama.

While at Auburn University, Judd earned a Bachelor of Science in Horticulture with an emphasis in landscape design. He also earned an undergraduate Business Minor. He remained at Auburn University to earn a Master of Landscape Architecture Degree, the terminal degree for this field, in 2007. Judd graduated magna cum laude and was also inducted into both Tau Sigma Delta and Sigma Lambda Alpha Honor Societies. While a student in the Landscape Architecture program, he served as a Research and Teaching Assistant to the Chair of the Master of Landscape Architecture Program, where he gained university teaching experience as well as experience in stormwater design. Additionally, with his graduate assistantship Judd designed and implemented rain gardens and other green infrastructure within the Auburn University Arboretum. Judd’s master’s level training provided a variety of hands-on experiences combined with diverse research and studies in horticulture and landscape architecture which influenced his passion and interest in creative and innovative stormwater, sustainable, and green design. While in graduate school, Judd served as the Treasurer for the American Society for Landscape Architects (ASLA) Auburn University Student Chapter for two years and was awarded the ASLA Merit Award for best thesis project and design.

Upon graduation, Judd joined The Olin Studio in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania as a landscape designer and planner. While at Olin, he worked on projects across the country ranging from a 400 acre brownfield mixed-use redevelopment in Napa, California, to a variety of projects in the mid-west and along the east coast. His project experience included sustainable campus planning and design for University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wisconsin and University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Additionally, Judd worked on the following projects while at Olin: urban planning and design for the Napa Pipe Redevelopment Project in Napa, California; master planning for the New York Botanical Garden, Bronx, New York; and garden, recreational and courtyard design for the Phipps Playground at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland.

After gaining invaluable experience at Olin, Judd returned to his home state to reside in Birmingham, Alabama, where he worked with a local mutli-disciplinary firm, Barge Waggoner Sumner & Cannon, for two years before becoming a founding partner at 2D Studio. Since the inception of 2D Studio, Judd has served as project manager for the complete restoration of Genetta Ditch in Montgomery, AL, an urban stream on the 303d impaired streams list. The restoration plan included 3,200 linear feet of restored stream channel and riparian zone, a constructed wetland, a variety of green infrastructure to remediate stormwater before it enters the stream, and a passive park that would help to educate and stimulate the public. True to his roots, Judd has continued his pursuit of landscape gardening and sustainable residential design while continuing to evolve in project experience and interest in the design profession.”

You can contact him here:

Judd Langham, ASLA, LEED AP
Principal | Designer | Planner
205.202.4101 ph
205.335.3761 cell
judd@2dstudiollc.com
The Langham'shttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14427948269312695822noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2817406497943045953.post-4963724120893238392012-08-16T20:29:00.001-05:002012-08-16T21:37:34.723-05:00Essentials for Southern Men
This post falls into a category created long ago on this blog called “Southern Women How To’s.” In this case, the post is about how a southern woman can recognize a southern gentleman. Or better yet, it is to provide a glimpse into the life and style of a southern gentleman. Of course, for all true southern women and men the items in this post are nothing new. Southerness is not something that can simply be acquired by physical location, the way one dresses, the way one acts, the way one drinks or eats, or even one’s level of enthusiasm for sporting events. It is, however, a compilation of all of these things and then some.

I was inspired to write this post after reviewing with colleagues (Hi Teresa and Jaime!) a Southern Living online article featuring lists of southern essentials for both men and women. Click these links for the SL list for men and the SL list for women. I agreed with most of the items on this list. Although, I immediately began recalling things that I thought were excluded. The SL list was a “top 10” list so there was a limit to what could be included. My list will be much more extensive and will fall in no particular order. I may even add to it in the future. You can access the original source for each photograph by clicking on it. I have linked the photos through my Southern Men Pinterest Board. Feel free to follow me on Pinterest if you like.

(Note: In no way did I intend to declare that all southern men should have these items to be complete. :) This list is simply my own thoughts about one of my favorite things: southern men. Many of the items I have included were chosen because they remind me of my true southern gent. of a husband.)

I’ll do a follow-up post in the future for southern women essentials.

Ok, here’s my list of essentials for the southern man.

1.
Don't give up on me. I'm still around and wanting to post. I am having trouble with publishing from Windows Live Writer. I get a message saying that a remote server can't be found.

I am so frustrated. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I am having to publish this from the Blogger iPhone app.
Any photos without our watermark were taken by Julie.

We offer several options for our wedding invitations. Each design can be purchased separately or as a package. The individual wedding invitation is available for $45.00. The Brenna will be customized entirely for any bride and groom who order it. The monogram and colors can be changed to fit the look and feel of the client’s wedding. This design was created to fit a square 6 1/4” x 6 1/4” piece of cardstock. The invitation fits inside of an envelope that is 6 1/2” x 6 1/2” in size. We, The Langham Project DIY Printable Invitations/Stationary, send the customer a digital file of his or her order. The customer is then able to purchase any paper of his or her choosing and is able to print as many or as few invitations as needed on a home printer. Another option for the customer is to ask a local print shop to print the order. Brenna ordered her paper from an online source and then printed the components you will see in the following pictures on her home printer.
<div style="padding-bottom: 0px; We've witnessed it become a make believe house, school, and even a magazine/newspaper headquarters. In fact, Judd and I bought two "subscriptions" for a quarter a piece a few weekends ago.

Yesterday a for sale sign was placed on the lot. Apparently the children were very upset about this. Look at the sign that they put up this afternoon.

I thought it was too cute not to share with you all.

I have such sympathy for our pint size neighbors. My childhood neighbors and I were so much like them (Hi Carolyn and Rachel). I think their little hearts are broken. She even brought her little doggy, Miss Toddy.

I'm ok with this distraction. I am SO glad to get some special time with her this week.

Also, watching Judd snuggle and brush Miss Toddy put a pretty big smile on my face.

I hope you are all having a good week so far.
GREAT! (cue sarcasm).” I was crying so hard that the student assistants who work in our suite were ready to tear down the door to make sure I was ok. Again, GREAT! (cue an even heavier sarcastic tone). Seriously, why I am making this process so hard on myself? Or, am I even doing that? Is this what getting a Ph.D. is supposed to feel like?

I am exhausted. I know I have said that before on the blog. I mean it now and I meant it then too. I realized last week that I will have spent longer working on my Ph.D than I did on my entire bachelor’s degree. I finished my undergraduate work in three years (9 full continuous semesters). I have already had 9 full non-stop semesters in my doctoral program and have approximately 2 or 3 more to go if I am lucky. It could be even longer than that if I can’t get my writing together. I feel like a broken record by saying this; but I am going to say it anyway. I am working full-time (8-5), taking three classes, and trying to write the prospectus for my dissertation. I guess I should be tired but I don’t feel like I should. I feel like I am drowning and should instead be able to keep all of the balls I am juggling in the air. I feel like I should be able to keep up with the pace of this life that I have CHOSEN!

Currently, I feel completely stressed, out of shape, pre-maturely aged, unkempt, disorganized, worried, nauseous, and depleted. I have even had some shortness of breath issues here lately. Gosh, Abby, get a grip. I am way too stubborn to give up. I know deep down inside that I will eventually finish this degree. But, geez-Louise and H-E-Double-Hockey-Sticks this has been one hellacious obstacle to overcome. Don’t worry folks I blog to vent. I promise I am not on the verge of “jumping.” I am just FRUSTRATED as all get out. Worst of all, I am frustrated and disappointed in myself. There is no one to blame for my lack of progress but me.

I looked around my office during my total and complete breakdown and was part disgusted and part amused by the fact that I have allowed myself to be so visibly unhinged. What you are seeing is my real office at my real full-time, grown-up person, university job. Good grief, what is wrong with me?

My colleagues have all been so sweet and supportive (although I feel confident that deep down they are wondering what in the world is wrong with me). I wish I could just get a grip. I am trying. I’ve put on my big girl pants and continued pushing ahead despite the fact that my brain and spirit are fighting as every single word or thought is typed.

Well, I guess that pretty much sums it up. That is where I am at this particular moment. I know that God gives us all obstacles to overcome and that He often reminds us that we are not the ones in ultimate control over our lives. I chose this path for my life and must live with the consequences and trials that come with it. I understand that there are so many more difficult problems to face in the world than the one I am experiencing. I am so fortunate in the grand scheme of things. Despite my truly Debbie Downer perspective I have not forgotten that I have a husband, family and friends (and faithful blog readers) who love, encourage, and support me. I know I wouldn’t have even made it this far without them (you). I also know that I will be so proud when this ordeal is over and that I will probably look back on these times and laugh. I am just not there yet.
The Langham'shttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14427948269312695822noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2817406497943045953.post-76140618975828422602012-02-28T08:42:00.001-06:002012-02-28T09:32:04.927-06:00New Blog HeaderLook! The Langham Project got a new blog header.

Judd designed this for us the other day.

What do y'all think? We both have wide screens so we are not sure how it looks on other computers.

Can you see it? Is it centered? Any suggestions?
