On the Third Day Before Halloween….

…our house was swarmed by bats.

The idea of using flying bats as Halloween decor also came from Martha Stewart.  Although, I altered the directions for this project to better fit my time restrictions.  Sometimes Martha takes the long route.

Here is Martha’s batty lamp.  I thought everything about this picture was so cute for Halloween.

The template I used for my little bats was the result of a Google image search for a black bat.  (My batty lamps are below.)  I chose the bat found in the template below because it had a simple shape that was easy to cut out.  I just right clicked the picture, saved it, and printed as many as I needed to fill all sides of each shade. (Pardon the poor photography on my part.  I snapped these on my way out the door with Judd’s iphone.  There was no time for staging or editing.  You still kind of get the idea right?)

The materials you will need to make the bats my way are found below:

• Computer
• Printer
• Scissors
• Tape
• Plain white printer paper

Martha’s instructions suggest you use her template, trace the bats on to black paper, cut them out, and hang them from wire inside the shade. 

My directions are simple.  Use the template for the easy to cut out bat shape I provided above or search for an image you like better.   Make sure the bat image you choose is already filled in with black.  That way, you can use your regular white printer paper and you can save yourself a step of having to trace the template onto black paper.   Who has time for that?  Not me.  :)

Once you have printed the number of bats that you need, stack several sheets of bat printed paper up to cut out multiple bats at one time. 

When all the bats have been cut out, use one small piece of clear tape for each bat.  Put the tape at the top of each bats’ head with the sticky side of the tape on the white side of your paper.  Place the tape where half of the piece is on the bat and the other half is sticking up above the bat’s head.  Make sure your lamp is off and that the bulb is cool so that you do not burn yourself.  Adhere each bat inside your shade using the part of the tape that is sticking up above the head making sure that the black side of the bats are facing outward.

Finally, turn on your lamp and see the spooky shade you have created. 

I also put bats in our dining room chandelier.  I think they look spooktacular!

On the Fourth Day Before Halloween…

…our house was infested with mice.  Eeek!

If you are having a Halloween party this weekend or if you just want the house to be decorated for spooky fun try the ideas below.

I first got the idea to decorate with mice silhouettes from Martha Stewart.   As much as I love Martha, I often find that there is an easier way to create some of her projects than by following her directions.  Life is busy.  Who has time to follow all of the rules?  :)

The materials you will need to make the mice silhouettes my way are listed below:

• Scissors
• Computer
• Printer
• Note cards
• Glue stick
• Plain white printer paper

Martha suggested printing her mice template.  Next, her directions instruct you to trace the mice onto black construction paper and proceed to cut out each one.  Again, I thought that would just take way too long.  Well, that and I had already used my black construction paper for another project that I will show you in the coming days before Halloween.

Here is what I did.  (My bookshelf with mice is below).  On Martha’s template the mice are already filled in with black.  I just used my regular ole white printing paper and let the printer make black mice for me rather than tracing the template onto colored paper.  Voila.  One click to tell your machine to print and you have black mice.  I printed several pages of her template so that I had plenty of mice.  (Pardon the grainy photos.  They were all taken at night using Judd’s iphone.)

I proceeded to put several pages of the templates together at a time when cutting out the mice.  You know, cut out one mouse and have four because you’ve stacked multiple sheets when cutting.  To fully maximize the small amount of free time I have, I brought my printed templates with me and cut most of the mice out on my lunch break at work.  There is never a dull moment in my office.  Ha.

 

To make the mice stand up, I cut a few note cards into thin strips.  I placed one strip on each mouse and made sure it didn’t show from the front.  I then used a glue stick to secure the strips onto the back of the mice.  This gave them enough support to stand up.

Next, I turned most of the books on our shelf backwards so the pages would provide a better contrast with the mice.  This helped the silhouettes to show up better.  (Note: On a normal basis, I am vehemently opposed to turning books backwards on your shelf or covering spines with velum, cloth, etc.  I’ve noticed that a lot of designers are doing that lately to keep their rooms looking monochromatic.  I think it is absurd.  Books are for reading, sharing, and discussing.  They provide a deeper understanding of the world around us.  They are for spreading knowledge.  How will the designers and the owners of the homes they design be able to utilize their books if they don’t know which ones are which? OK.  I’m off my soapbox).  I figured for 31 days in October we could spare turning ours around; however, they will not stay like this.  We like our books.  We read and enjoy them all year long.

Next, I placed the little critters on our bookshelf.  Most of them are freestanding.  I did, however, put a rolled  piece of tape on the backs and tails of a few of them for support.

To up the spooky factor, I filled a basket with some glittered pumpkins and placed it on the shelf.

Also, I found some great websites that allowed me to print some creepy art to replace our usual photos on the shelf.  I just opened the frames and put these on top of our usual pictures.  Again, I just printed them on regular white printer paper.  I didn’t have any photo paper.  In my opinion, the regular paper added a flat look which increased the level of scary.

Overall, the project was easy and a lot of fun to create.  Also, I don’t think this will take long to put back to normal when Halloween is over.    You still have time to make this for the weekend.  If you do, leave a comment and share your post about it.  It would be fun to see how you’ve used the mice.

A Trip Down Halloween Lane

There are so many blog posts that I’ve been meaning to write.  I’ve built up quite a list of topics.  Judd even has one he has been thinking about posting.  I’ve been so consumed with life in general that I have not had a chance to even start a single post.  I really enjoy blogging.  I’ve missed you folks.

Our house is all decorated for Halloween.  I can’t wait to show you all what I have done.  That will have to wait too.  I haven’t taken any pictures of it yet.

Anyways, since I’ve been a total lurker of all of your great blogs lately, yet haven’t managed to post on mine in the past decade (well…two weeks but it feels like a decade in blogosphere time) here is a quick overview of a few of our Halloweens past.  These are all photos I just happen to already have scanned and saved on my computer.  I promise to do a post with actual substance sometime soon.

Judd’s always loved Halloween too.  Here he is with his brother, Colby (left). 

This is me on our front porch at my old house in Huntsville, AL with my oldest friend, Rachel.  She was in my big brother Bryan’s grade.  We were next door neighbors.  She, her sister (hi Carolyn),  Bryan, and I were pretty much inseparable.  We spent lots of afternoons doing homework together.  We also spent lots of time together decorating for Halloween, trick-or-treating, and even recording a “spooky sounds” tape in their storm shelter.  Good times.

Fast forward several years to 2002.  This is my sorority sister, Jaclyn, and me at a fraternity party in Auburn.  That was also a good time.  Ha.

Continue fast forwarding a few more years to 2004 when Judd and I were engaged.  We hosted a pumpkin carving party at his house (which is now the house we use to tailgate in at Auburn.) 

This little trip down Halloween lane was fun for me.  I hope you enjoyed it and I hope that you make happy memories with your friends and family this Halloween.

Yard Sale Mayhem

For those of you who read The Lettered Cottage (like I do) then you already know that Layla from TLC hosted a joint yard sale last weekend with Rhoda from Southern Hospitality.  The sale was in Birmingham, AL at Rhoda’s house.  Layla and her husband, Kevin, drove up from Montgomery, AL with a load full of yard sale stuffs.  When I say load, I mean…

L-O-A-D.

Since we live nearby, Judd and I decided to check things out.  We are not the early-bird-yard-sale types.  Apparently, some folks arrived at Rhoda’s house really early.  The sale was advertised to start at 8am.  Yikes.

We decided we needed sustenance first.  We had an early morning breakfast date from Chick-fil-a and then headed down highway 280 towards Rhoda’s.  I made this video while in Judd’s truck on the way to the sale.  Yes, we took Judd’s truck actually thinking we might have a chance to buy something.  And yes, this is a terrible video.  Note to self, don’t even think about making a video of yourself speaking when you have a cold that makes you sound like Fran Drescher.  Epic blogger fail.  I thought y’all might get a kick out of it.  So, at my own expense, here it is. 

Did that make milk come out of your nose or what???  Ha. 

Anyways, we arrived at Rhoda’s around 8:10 to find a crowd full of people assembled and waiting for Layla.  You see, Layla wasn’t there yet and being the blog star that she is, everybody was sticking around to see her and peruse her items for sale.  Judd and I didn’t mind waiting because we ran into a friend of mine from high school.  We chatted with him and his wife while waiting for Layla.

After we stood around for a short while, Layla and Kevin arrived.

 

 

When they drove up, Judd and I were at the top of the drive way.  Before we knew it, the crowd below us swarmed the trailer.   We didn’t stand a chance.  I just couldn’t muster up the courage to fight the crowd.  People were literally buying the items as Layla and Kevin unloaded them.   If you look closely you’ll see us at the very top of the driveway. Judd and I are both wearing white shirts.  Note: I didn’t have my camera so these photos are Rhoda’s.  She was nice enough to allow me to use them.  Thanks Rhoda.  :)

We made our way down the driveway and watched in amazement from the back of the line.

I couldn’t even see the items until they were in the hands of their new owners.  I saw faux-liage, benches, and chairs passing before me left and right.

Judd talked football with another husband.  They were being such good sports.  Kevin was too for that matter.  I, however, kept my eyes on the trailer in sheer awe of what was happening.  I look scared don’t I???

I enjoyed going.  It was a treat to get to see Layla and Kevin.  I must emphasize the “see” part.  At this point, I felt like I was wasting our time.  I knew we wouldn’t be able to get close enough to purchase anything.  We decided to leave before I ever actually got to meet them.  Maybe we’ll run into them another time.  I know I’ve seen some Auburn attire on their blog before.  Perhaps we’ll finally get to meet them sometime down on the plains.  :) 

     

Overall, we decided the morning was a success.  It got us up early, allowed us to have an adventure together, and hey, at least we got a chicken biscuit out of it.  :)

It’s About Time….

It’s about time we got a new one of these for tailgating.  The bad boy below was shipped to us last week.  Now we just have to load it in Judd’s truck and take it down to the plains.  If you’re new around here you may not have seen some of our older posts about Auburn University football tailgates.  You can view them here or  here if you wish.  

We love our tigers and our tailgating.  Judd’s parents bought the house we rented when in graduate school.  It is now used as a tailgate home.  We’ve really enjoyed our time there with friends and family.  We are REALLY looking forward to that again this year.  I hope this new tent exceeds our expectations.  We plan to put it in our usual tailgate spot, the back yard.  The house is across the street from campus so the yard is usually a pretty happening place on game days.

Our old tent, seen below, was purchased when Judd was just starting his undergraduate experience at Auburn about 10 years ago.  It had a good run but just couldn’t withstand another season.

In addition to spending time in our new tent, there are a few other things I can’t wait to do.  I look forward to spending time with this guy doing something he loves so much.  To say he likes football, especially Auburn football, is an understatement.

I look forward to spending time with these folks too.  I also can’t wait to the devour the yummy dishes we serve at tailgates.

 

And who says football is just for men?  Us women can get pretty into it too.  Not only do I love the game itself, but I love the party planning, fellowship, and outfit coordinating parts of it all too.  Speaking of, I decided the tent couldn’t be the only new thing we get for football season this year.  I bought this dress thinking it would be cute for the first tailgate.  I can’t wait to wear it on Saturday.

Auburn University Rural Studio on PBS Tonight

 

I just wanted to share that Auburn University’s Rural Studio will be featured on PBS tonight at 9:00PM CST. 

You can watch the trailer below.  Many of our close friends in the College of Architecture, Design, and Construction at Auburn worked at Rural Studio.  As Auburn University graduates, we are so proud of the work our university and students are doing through this program to improve the quality of life for so many in rural Alabama.

Just Another Typical Night???

 

It’s just another typical night at the Langham’s.

Our spoiled rotten dog is asleep on the living room floor.

He has almost as many layers beneath him as the princess, or in his case, prince, and the pea. (Do you remember that story?)  For his comfort and our fear of dog slobber and hair on our rug, his bed sits atop a doggy blanket of which he is not allowed to venture off unless otherwise directed.  Behind him a fan blows to keep him cool and relaxed.

Now that’s the life.

And so are high heels and fuzzy slippers???

Ok, here is where our normal evening took a turn for the unusual.   As previously mentioned, Judd and I started our own business.  What’s our product you ask?  Well, we offer professional custom DIY printable invitations and stationary.  Our designs are very affordable.  Plus, there is no minimum or maximum order because, well, you print them yourself.  Judd, my handy and extremely talented husband creates beautiful artwork to add to your invitation or stationary.  He drafts either by hand or with the his fancy schmancy computer programs, renders, and edits it all himself and creates a high resolution pdf which is sent to you when complete.  We first started with wedding invitations and have ventured on to events such as tool and gadget showers, baby showers, bridal teas, bridesmaids’ luncheons, and now LINGERIE showers.

Disregard the clutter, I took the photos as is because I thought it was funny to see my shoes on our ottoman.  Judd has an incredible eye and talent and can usually draw anything with, or more often than not without, a prop to use as inspiration.  This time, however, when asked to create a lingerie shower invite for one of our good friends he was drawing a blank.  Pun intended.  :)  While being his typical masculine self, petting his 100lb dog and watching NFL football at the same time, he replied, “I can’t visualize girl stuff.”  He requested I go to the closet and pull out some inspiration. I grabbed some slippers, heels, robes, and other more delicate items if you catch my drift.

I told him I hoped our neighbors didn’t walk in because we might just look like freaks.  Ha.  I had the most feminine of clothing hanging all over the living room for him while he sketched.

Here is just one of the many reasons I love my husband and our most recent, slightly less typical, evening.

I love to watch him think, visualize, and create.  (I especially love that he found a purple set of paintbrushes in my craft closet left over from making something for my sorority little sister.)  It takes a real man to watercolor women’s lingerie with purple brushes.  That or it takes a man who was too lazy to look for a better tool.  Ha.

  

I can’t wait to show you all the finished product.  I also can’t wait to show you some of our other finished products for that matter.  I’ll try to get in a post about those soon.
